PER PERSONBhutan: The Kingdom That Measures Happiness, Not GDP.
Seven days through a country that only opened its doors to television in 1999 and still counts national success in "Gross National Happiness" instead of money. This isn't a checklist tour — it's a walk through living monasteries, dzong-fortresses guarding ancient rivers, and a monastery clinging to a cliff 3,000 feet above a valley floor.
Start in Thimphu, home to the world's largest sitting Buddha statue and the last king's national memorial. Drive on to Punakha, where two rivers — one called "male," one called "female" — meet beneath a 17th-century fortress that once housed Bhutan's first parliament. Reach Paro, and hike to Taktsang Monastery — the Tiger's Nest — built where legend says a saint flew in on the back of a tigress and meditated in a cave for three months. Finish at Chele La Pass, one of the highest driveable points in the Himalayas, before heading home.
No crowds, no rush — just one of the last places on Earth still measuring its worth in something other than money.
Your guide meets you at the airport and stays with you for the whole trip. Drive to Thimphu, freshen up, and after lunch head straight to Kuensel Phodrang — Buddha Point — home to one of the largest sitting Buddha statues on Earth (169 feet tall), overlooking the entire Thimphu valley. Evening free to explore the town. Overnight in Thimphu.
A full day inside Bhutan's capital: the Folk Heritage Museum (a real 19th-century traditional house, not a replica), the Takin Preserve (home to Bhutan's bizarre national animal — part goat, part something else entirely), Simply Bhutan's living-village experience, the Memorial Chorten built for Bhutan's third king, and Tashichhoe Dzong — a 17th-century fortress that still houses the king's throne room today. Overnight in Thimphu.
A scenic 3-hour drive. Stop at Dochula Pass to see 108 stupas built in memory of Bhutanese soldiers, then Chime Lhakhang — a small, unusually shaped temple famous for fertility blessings. End at Punakha Dzong, "The Palace of Great Happiness," sitting at the exact meeting point of two rivers and once the seat of Bhutan's first national assembly. Overnight in Punakha.
A 5-hour drive through some of the best Himalayan views on the route — plan for photo stops. On arrival in Paro, visit Paro Dzong (the "fortress of the heap of jewels"), the National Museum (built originally as a watchtower, shaped like a European castle), and Kyichu Lhakhang, one of 108 ancient temples said to hold down a mythical demoness across the Himalayas. Overnight in Paro.
The signature day of the trip. Hike up to Taktsang Monastery — the Tiger's Nest — perched on a cliff over 10,000 feet up. Legend says a saint flew here on a tigress's back and meditated in a cave for three months; the monastery was later built around that same cave. Horses are available for anyone who prefers not to hike (charged separately). Overnight in Paro.
Drive up to Chele La Pass — at nearly 13,000 feet, one of the highest points you can reach by road in Bhutan, sitting between the Paro and Haa valleys. Evening free for shopping or rest in Paro. Overnight in Paro.
